His Hebrew name, "Rāzīʾēl," directly translates to "God is my Mystery," underscoring his role in holding and revealing divine enigmas. He is also known by the title "Keeper of All Magic" and is associated with the sephirah Chokmah, a divine attribute representing wisdom.

According to tradition, Raziel stands close to God's throne and diligently records all divine pronouncements. The book's supposed gifting to Adam and Eve led to its theft by other angels and its eventual retrieval by divine intervention. This legendary book is said to have passed through significant figures such as Enoch, Raphael, Noah, and King Solomon throughout history, with various texts claiming to be its original form.

Within the complex angelic hierarchies described in Jewish mysticism, Raziel is assigned various positions. He is sometimes identified as a cherub, a member of the Ophanim (a class of celestial beings), or the chief of the Erelim. Under his alternate name, Galliṣur, meaning "Revealer of The Rock," he is described as the "ruling prince of the 2nd Heaven," responsible for expounding the divine wisdom of the Torah and protecting other angels. His perceived proximity to God's throne allows him access to divine insights.
