About Mannarasala Snake Temple

Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple

The Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple, situated in Haripad, Kerala, India, is an ancient and internationally recognized pilgrimage destination dedicated to the worship of serpent deities, known as Nagaraja. Nestled within a forest glade, the temple is famed for housing over 100,000 images of snakes along its paths and among the trees, making it the largest such temple in Kerala.

History and Legends

While historical records are scarce, the temple's origin is deeply intertwined with legends involving Lord Parashurama, believed to be the creator of Kerala. According to the Sanskrit poem 'Mandara Salodyam', Parashurama reclaimed land from the sea to gift to Brahmins. However, the land was initially uninhabitable due to salinity and a prevalence of poisonous snakes. To remedy this, snake worship was initiated, and Parashurama undertook penance to please Lord Shiva, who advised the worship of Nagaraja. A pleased Nagaraja appeared before Parashurama, and his presence, along with the serpent's poison, is said to have desalinated the land, making it habitable and green.

Later legends tell of a couple, Vasudeva and Sreedevi, who faced childlessness. They became devoted to Nagaraja and cared for serpents injured during a forest fire. Nagaraja, pleased with their devotion and compassion, blessed them, incarnating as their son and promising to reside permanently in Mannarasala to bestow prosperity and protection. It is believed that a five-hooded Nagaraja continues to reside in the temple's cellar in Samadhi, blessing devotees.

Significance and Practices

The Mannarasala Temple is a significant pilgrimage site, particularly for couples seeking fertility. They often visit to pray for children and later return to hold thanksgiving ceremonies, frequently offering new snake images as tokens of gratitude. A special turmeric paste dispensed at the temple is also believed to possess curative powers.

Festivals

The main festival celebrated at the temple is Mannarasala Ayilyam. This event takes place on the day of the Ayilyam asterism in the Malayalam months of Kanni and Thulam (September and October). During this festival, all the serpentine idols from the grove and the temple are carried in procession to the ancestral Brahmin illom (house), where special offerings are made. The matriarch of the Mannarasala Illom plays a prominent role, carrying the idol of Nagaraja during the grand procession.
