Abraham of Galich

Abraham of Galich, also known by the epithets Chukhlomsky or Gorodetsky, was an influential abbot within the Russian Orthodox Church. He lived during the 14th century and is recognized for his significant contributions to monasticism in the Galich region.

Life and Ministry

Little is known about Abraham's early life, including his secular name and birthplace. Historical accounts indicate that he began his monastic life at the Pechersky Ascension Monastery in Nizhny Novgorod before moving to the Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra. It was there he became a disciple of the revered Sergius of Radonezh. Following Sergius's guidance, Abraham journeyed to the Galich princedom. His ministry in this area was marked by the establishment of several important monasteries. He founded the Avraamiyev Novozaozersky Monastery on the northeastern shore of Galich Lake and later established three more monasteries, including the Gorodets Monastery on the northern shore of Lake Chukhloma.

Death and Veneration

Abraham of Galich died around July 20, 1375, in a chapel near one of his monasteries, where he had retreated shortly before his passing. While this date is traditional, some scholars suggest a slightly later death year based on contemporary figures. He was canonized for local veneration on two occasions, in 1553 and again in 1621. His hagiography was compiled in the mid-16th century. Abraham is venerated in the Russian Orthodox Church, with his feast day observed on July 20th. Later centuries saw the construction of cathedrals over his relics, including one built between 1608 and 1631 and another in 1857–1867. His name was also entered into the Cathedral of the Kostroma Saints in 1981.
