Life and Spiritual Leadership
From a young age, Theodosius was drawn to spiritual pursuits. In 1608, he joined Job of Manyava, along with several others, to embrace a life of strict asceticism and monastic seclusion in the wilderness of the Carpathian Mountains. Chosen by Job for his zeal and humility, Theodosius played a crucial role in the establishment of the mountain monastery. The monastery church was consecrated in 1612 on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
When Job of Manyava embarked on a pilgrimage, he entrusted Theodosius with the leadership of the community, referring to him as "our shepherd and spiritual father" and designating him as hegumen. Theodosius led the monastery for eight years following Job's death on December 29, 1621.
Influence and Recognition
Theodosius's exemplary life of sanctity and virtue became widely known, with rumors of his strict living spreading across Galicia, Volynia, Northern Bukovina, Moldova, and Romania. His spiritual authority and the rigorous monastic rules of Manyava Skete garnered significant respect from other Orthodox monasteries in the region. In recognition of his leadership, at the church synod of 1628, hegumen Theodosius and his community were appointed as the heading monastery (prot) responsible for 556 other monasteries in western Ukraine and Moldavia, including prominent ones like Suceava and Neamț.
Peter Mohyla, the metropolitan of Kyiv, spoke highly of Theodosius's community, describing them as "200 angels in human flesh dedicated their lives to God by their service."
Death and Veneration
Theodosius died in 1629 and was buried alongside his teacher, Job. The large stone tombstone with an engraved Orthodox cross that marked their graves is preserved and venerated at Manyava Skete.
