Geseke

Geseke is a town located in the administrative district of Soest, within the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Situated strategically along the historic Hellweg route and the B1 federal highway, it lies approximately 12 kilometers southeast of Lippstadt and 20 kilometers southwest of Paderborn. The town is characterized by its religious heritage, evident in several notable churches, and a lively cultural calendar featuring various annual festivals and events.

History and Significance

Geseke's historical importance is partly rooted in its religious institutions. The Church of St. Peter serves as the city church, located near the market square and pedestrian zone. A significant site is the Church of St. Cyriacus, a pilgrimage church with a particular connection to the Virgin Mary. Another religious building is the monastery church of St. John the Baptist. The Old Town Hall, in addition to its administrative function, contains meeting rooms and a Catholic Library, underscoring the town's historical engagement with religious and civic life.

The town boasts a city museum that offers insights into Geseke's past. Culturally, Geseke is active with numerous music clubs and choirs, including marching bands, brass bands, and various vocal ensembles. Events and Festivals

A prominent event is the "Geseker Gösselkirmes," a fun fair typically held on the first Thursday in May, complete with carousels, lottery booths, and food stalls, often accompanied by a parade. At Pentecost, citizens participate in their shooting match (Bürgerschützenfest), followed by the Sebastianers shooters' match on the first weekend in July. The "Lobetag" involves a fair in the abbey church and a significant procession. Other notable events include the "Weinfest" (Wine Festival) in June, the "Hexenstadtfest" (Witch City Festival) in September, and the "Weihnachtsmarkt" (Christmas market) in December. Regular pilgrimages are also a recurring feature at the collegiate church.

Administration and Geography

Following administrative reforms in 1975, Geseke is organized into eight boroughs: Geseke, Bönninghausen, Ehringhausen, Eringerfeld, Ermsinghausen, Langeneicke, Mönninghausen, and Störmede. Geographically, the town is well-connected, with a railway station served by the Ems-Börde-Bahn, providing links to cities like Paderborn and Lippstadt. The proximity to the A44 motorway and Paderborn/Lippstadt Airport further enhances its accessibility. Geseke also maintains an international relationship through its twinning with Loos, France, a partnership established in 1978.
