Bertinoro Cathedral

Bertinoro Cathedral, officially known as the Concattedrale di Santa Caterina, is a significant religious edifice located in the town of Bertinoro, within the province of Forlì-Cesena, Italy. Dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria, it formerly served as the principal seat for the bishops of Bertinoro. Today, it functions as a co-cathedral, sharing its ecclesiastical responsibilities within the broader Diocese of Forlì-Bertinoro.

History and Construction

The history of religious structures on this site dates back to a small oratory dedicated to Saint Catherine. This earlier structure was demolished at the close of the 16th century. The present cathedral was subsequently rebuilt in the Bramantesque style, an endeavor commissioned by Bishop Giovanni Andrea Caligari. Construction of the current building concluded in the 17th century. A curious architectural detail of its placement was its backing onto the Palazzo Comunale, influenced by the belief that the latter building was unstable and might be demolished, a prediction that did not materialize.

Architecture and Artistry

The interior of Bertinoro Cathedral features a nave divided into three distinct aisles. The cathedral houses several notable works of art that contribute to its cultural and religious significance. These include a painting titled 'The Virgin between Saints Peter and Paul' by Francesco Longhi. The high altar is adorned with an 18th-century painting from the Bolognese School, depicting 'The mystical nights of St. Catherine of Alexandria.' Additionally, a carved wooden crucifix, attributed to the Italian-German school and with parts believed to date from the 16th century, is displayed on the north altar. Local legend surrounds this crucifix, suggesting its maker was a pilgrim who discovered it growing from a fig tree after a period of monastic retreat.

Beneath the main structure of the cathedral lies a crypt, which is accessible from the outside, offering a unique subterranean space for contemplation or historical exploration.
