Ramdas Bandu Athawale is a prominent Indian politician, social activist, and trade unionist hailing from Maharashtra. He is widely recognized as the president of the Republican Party of India (A), a political party that traces its origins to the Scheduled Castes Federation founded by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. Athawale has been an influential figure in Indian politics, serving as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment since 2016 and representing Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India's Parliament, since 2014.

Early Life and Buddhist Practice

Born on December 25, 1959, in Agalgaon, Sangli district, Bombay State (now Maharashtra), Athawale's parents were Bandu Bapu and Honsabai Bandu Athawale. He is a practicing Buddhist and has been actively involved in various Buddhist organizations. He served as president of the Parivartan Kala Mahasangha, the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Foundation, and the Bauddha Kalawant Academy (Buddhist Artists Academy), and was the founder president of the Bauddha Dhamma Parishad (Buddhism conference). His early education included studies at Siddharth College of Law in Mumbai. He is married to Seema Athawale and has a son.

Political Career and Activism

Inspired by the ideals of B. R. Ambedkar, Athawale's political journey has been marked by his leadership in movements aimed at social justice. He was a Cabinet minister in the Government of Maharashtra from 1990 to 1995, holding portfolios such as Social Welfare and Transport. He has also served multiple terms as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, representing constituencies like Pandharpur and Mumbai North Central.
