Isabel Cristina Mrad Campos

Isabel Cristina Mrad Campos was a devout Brazilian Catholic laywoman, born on 29 July 1962 in Barbacena. Affectionately known as "Cris," she was noted for her kindness, intelligence, and a deep commitment to her faith and service to others. She attended the Immaculata College, run by the Vincentian Sisters, and was an active member of the Young Vincentians.

Life and Aspirations

From a young age, Isabel Cristina displayed a remarkable intellect and a compassionate heart. She dedicated her spare time to acts of charity, often assisting the poor and elderly with food and essential supplies. Her primary ambition was to pursue a medical career, specifically to become a pediatrician, with the goal of caring for underprivileged children, even considering serving in Africa. She was deeply spiritual, frequently engaging in Eucharistic adoration and attending Mass.

Martyrdom

In August 1982, Isabel Cristina moved to Juiz de Fora to prepare for her medical entrance examinations. Tragically, on 1 September 1982, she was murdered in her apartment by a tradesman she had hired, during an attempted rape. Her resistance to the assault led to her being stabbed multiple times. The investigation confirmed she was never raped. Her death was later recognized as having occurred "in hatred of the faith" and "in defense of her chastity."

Beatification

The process for Isabel Cristina Mrad Campos's beatification began in 2001. Pope Francis formally approved the decree recognizing her martyrdom on 27 October 2020. Her beatification ceremony took place in Barbacena on 10 December 2022, making her the first martyr from the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais and a significant figure in contemporary Catholic hagiography.
