Benigna Cardoso da Silva

Benigna Cardoso da Silva was a young Brazilian Catholic girl who lived in the first half of the 20th century. She is remembered for her devotion to her faith and for her martyrdom in defense of her chastity. Her life, though tragically short, has been recognized by the Catholic Church through her beatification.

Life and Historical Context

Born in Oiti, Brazil, on October 15, 1928, Benigna Cardoso da Silva was the youngest of four children. Her parents died when she was very young, and she and her siblings were adopted by sisters Rosa and Honorina Sisnando. Benigna's childhood was marked by a blend of simple joys, such as walks and picnics with her siblings, and responsibilities, as she diligently helped with household chores. She was also known for her regular attendance at Mass and her deep faith. Contemporaries described her as having a slender build, a rounded face, brown eyes, and brown hair, with a slight strabismus in one eye. No photographs of her are known to exist.

Martyrdom and Beatification

In October 1941, when Benigna was twelve years old, a young man named Raimundo Alves Riberio, who was around her age, began to make persistent sexual advances towards her. Benigna consistently rejected him and sought guidance from her parish priest, who advised her to resist Riberio's advances. Despite her continued refusals, Riberio became increasingly frustrated. On October 24, 1941, just one week after her thirteenth birthday, Riberio ambushed Benigna in an isolated area where she had gone to fetch water. He attacked her with a machete, inflicting four fatal blows. Benigna died at the scene, at the age of thirteen, a victim of her defense of chastity. Her remains were later relocated to the Santana do Cariri parish church.

The cause for Benigna's beatification began with initial steps in 2011. The formal process was introduced on January 31, 2013, and a diocesan process investigated her life and the circumstances of her death to ascertain if she died "in defensum castitatis" (in defense of chastity). The investigation concluded that she had indeed died protecting her virginity. After theological approval in October 2018, Pope Francis approved her beatification. Benigna Cardoso da Silva was officially beatified on October 24, 2022, in Ceará, Brazil, recognizing her as a martyr for purity.
