Adílio Daronch

Adílio Daronch (1908–1924) was a young Brazilian Catholic whose life of faith and service ended tragically with his martyrdom. Born in Rio Grande do Sul to Italian immigrant parents, Adílio was the third of eight children. He developed a strong devotion to his faith after receiving his First Communion, becoming a dedicated altar server and frequently accompanying Father Manuel Gómez González on his missionary journeys.

Life and Ministry

Adílio's childhood was marked by his family's relocations within Brazil and his early engagement with religious life. He was known to enjoy football and riding. His service as an altar server brought him into close contact with Father Manuel Gómez González, a priest engaged in evangelization efforts, particularly among the Kaingang Indians. Adílio assisted Father González in administering sacraments and participating in these missions.

Martyrdom and Beatification

In 1924, while on a mission to the Teutonic colonies, Adílio and Father González were targeted by revolutionaries who opposed their active apostolate. After attempting to foster reconciliation, the pair were ambushed on May 21, 1924, bound to trees, and shot dead. Their remains were discovered and later relocated to the parish church in Nonoai. The cause for their beatification opened in the late 1990s, and on October 21, 2007, Adílio Daronch, along with Father Manuel Gómez González, was beatified in Brazil by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, acting on behalf of Pope Benedict XVI, who recognized their death as being in odium fidei (in hatred of the faith).

Legacy

Adílio Daronch is remembered as a young martyr who died for his faith. His patronage extends to significant events and institutions within the Catholic Church. He was announced as a co-patron for World Youth Day 2013 and, in 2012, was declared a patron for the Diocese of Frederico Westphalen alongside Father Manuel Gómez González.
