About Ambrosio Kibuuka

Ambrosio Kibuuka (c. 1868 – June 3, 1886), also known by his birth names Katikamu and Mulundaggana, was a Ugandan Catholic martyr. He is remembered for his steadfast faith and courage in the face of death, having been burned alive for his Christian beliefs.

Life and Martyrdom

Born in Butuzzaliiso Ssingo, Buganda, around 1868, Ambrosio Kibuuka was the son of Kisuule Balamaze and Wampera. At the age of fifteen, he was brought to the royal palace to serve as a page for Kabaka Mwanga II. He was known for his social, kind, and cheerful disposition, as well as his talent in games and endurance for long working hours. Within the palace, he and his cousin Achilles Kiwanuka were placed under the care of Joseph Mukasa Balikuddembe, the leader of the Christian pages. After Balikuddembe's death, they were entrusted to Charles Lwanga.

Kibuuka became an ardent catechumen and was baptized a Catholic by missionary Père Siméon Lourdel (Mapeera) on November 16, 1885, the day after Joseph Mukasa's martyrdom. When King Mwanga II initiated a severe persecution of Christians, Kibuuka was among those arrested on May 26, 1886. He and his companions were marched to Namugongo, the execution site, where they were imprisoned for approximately a week.

On June 3, 1886, which was the Feast of the Ascension, Ambrosio Kibuuka, at about 17 or 18 years of age, was wrapped in a reed mat with others and burned alive on a large pyre. His martyrdom is a significant event in the history of Christianity in Uganda.
