Life and Martyrdom
Born in Butuzzaliiso Ssingo, Buganda, around 1868, Ambrosio Kibuuka was the son of Kisuule Balamaze and Wampera. At the age of fifteen, he was brought to the royal palace to serve as a page for Kabaka Mwanga II. Kibuuka became an ardent catechumen and was baptized a Catholic by missionary Père Siméon Lourdel (Mapeera) on November 16, 1885, the day after Joseph Mukasa's martyrdom. When King Mwanga II initiated a severe persecution of Christians, Kibuuka was among those arrested on May 26, 1886. He and his companions were marched to Namugongo, the execution site, where they were imprisoned for approximately a week.
On June 3, 1886, which was the Feast of the Ascension, Ambrosio Kibuuka, at about 17 or 18 years of age, was wrapped in a reed mat with others and burned alive on a large pyre. His martyrdom is a significant event in the history of Christianity in Uganda.
