Mwanga viewed Balikuddembe's counsel and his adherence to Christian principles as insubordination and disrespect. After an intense interrogation, the king condemned Balikuddembe to death. According to accounts, the Katikkiro (Prime Minister) Musaka ensured the execution was carried out swiftly. On November 15, 1885, Joseph Mukasa Balikuddembe was beheaded near the Nakivubo river, and his body was placed on burning firewood. His responsibilities were subsequently taken over by Charles Lwanga.
