Holy Name Monastery

Holy Name Monastery is a Roman Catholic Benedictine women's monastery situated in Saint Leo, Florida. It is operated by the Benedictine Sisters of Florida and represents a continuation of a religious community established in 1889. The monastery's history is marked by its dedication to education and its evolution through various names and locations before settling into its current identity and physical site.

History and Development

The origins of Holy Name Monastery trace back to 1889 when five sisters arrived in Florida from Elk County, Pennsylvania. Their primary mission was to address the educational needs of children belonging to German immigrant families in the San Antonio-St. Joseph area of Pasco County, Florida. Upon their arrival, the sisters took charge of St. Anthony School and St. Joseph School. Initially, both the convent and Holy Name Academy, an all-girls boarding school, were housed in the former Sultenfuss Hotel in San Antonio. In 1911, this substantial building was relocated to a hill overlooking Lake Jovita in Saint Leo. As the community and academy grew, St. Scholastica Hall, an early concrete block structure, was built in 1912 to serve as classroom space. The Benedictine Sisters of Florida also extended their educational outreach by staffing numerous mission schools across Florida and beyond. Over the years, the physical plant saw significant changes, including the replacement of the original hotel structure with a 100,000 square-foot concrete block complex in 1961. The academy and a nearby boys' preparatory school closed in 1964 to make way for St. Leo College. St. Scholastica Hall was demolished in 1978, and the sisters' involvement with St. Joseph School concluded in 1981. St. Anthony School, the oldest school in Pasco County, maintained a Benedictine/Holy Name presence for 121 years until 2010.

Current Life and Ministry

In August 2014, the Benedictine Sisters moved into a new 28,000 square-foot monastery on ten acres in Saint Leo. As of 2018, the monastery was home to 14 sisters and two in formation, all living according to the Rule of St. Benedict. This rule guides their life, emphasizing a balance between prayer and work, community and solitude, and the integration of contemplative living with active ministry serving others. The monastery actively hosts retreats. Sister Roberta Bailey, O.S.B., currently serves as the Prioress, elected by the monastery members. The community has evolved through several names, beginning as Holy Name Convent, then Holy Name Priory, and finally adopting its current name, Holy Name Monastery, in the 1990s.
