Vassago: A Demon of Knowledge and Love

Vassago, also known by variations such as Vasago and Usagoo, is a demon prominently featured in classical demonological grimoires, most notably the "Lesser Key of Solomon." This entity is consistently described as a prince possessing a "good nature," distinguishing him from many other infernal figures. His primary attributions involve the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge, particularly concerning past and future events, and the recovery of lost or hidden items.

Role and Attributes

Within the hierarchy described in the "Lesser Key of Solomon," Vassago commands twenty-six legions of spirits. His invocations are undertaken by magicians seeking insight into temporal matters or the location of misplaced possessions. He is also credited with the ability to incite the love of women, a power also mentioned in the "Book of the Office of Spirits," where he appears as Usagoo and is described as "just and true in all his doings." Interestingly, Vassago is one of the few entities from the "Lesser Key of Solomon" that does not appear in Johann Weyer's "Pseudomonarchia Daemonum." According to certain traditions, the Shemhamphorasch angel Sitael is considered Vassago's opposition.

Cultural and Modern Presence

Beyond his origins in occult texts, Vassago has made appearances in various forms of media. He is a character in Dean Koontz's novel "Hideaway" and its film adaptation. The demon's name was also adopted as a "vampire name" by cult leader Rod Ferrell. More recently, Vassago has been depicted in the animated web series "Helluva Boss" and as an enemy in the video game "Doom II." These modern interpretations highlight Vassago's enduring, albeit often adapted, presence in popular consciousness.
