Rafaela Porras Ayllón

Rafaela Porras Ayllón, known in religious life as Mary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was a Spanish religious sister and the co-founder of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Born on March 1, 1850, in Pedro Abad, Spain, she was the tenth of thirteen children. Her deep devotion to Jesus Christ was evident from her childhood, and the deaths of her father in 1854 and her mother in 1869 further motivated her spiritual life.

Life and Vocation

Rafaela made a vow of perpetual chastity on March 25, 1865. In 1874, she and her sister María Dolores entered the convent of Poor Clares to discern their vocation. They were clothed in the religious habit on June 4, 1874, and joined a group of novices. In 1875, they joined the Sisters of Mary Reparatrix, where Rafaela adopted the religious name María of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Later, with the aid of Bishop Zeferino González y Díaz Tuñón, they founded the Institute of Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament and Daughters of Mary Immaculate, which became the origin of the congregation they would establish.

Founding the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

In 1877, Rafaela, her sister, and sixteen other sisters moved to Madrid. The congregation received diocesan approval from the Archbishop of Toledo on April 14, 1877. Rafaela made her brief vows on June 8, 1877, and her perpetual profession on November 8, 1888. The congregation, officially named the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, received papal approval in 1887. The congregation expanded with new institutes forming in Spain and a house established in Rome in 1892.

Leadership and Later Life

Rafaela was appointed Superior of the congregation and served until March 3, 1893. She resigned due to misunderstandings with colleagues and appointed her sister as her successor. She then withdrew to the convent in Rome, where she resided until her death on January 6, 1925. Her death occurred during the benediction of the Eucharist in the convent chapel.

Sainthood

The process for her beatification began in Rome in 1936. She was proclaimed venerable on May 13, 1949, by Pope Pius XII. Pope Pius XII beatified her on May 18, 1952, after approving two miracles attributed to her intercession. A third miracle was investigated and approved, leading to her canonization by Pope Paul VI on January 23, 1977. Rafaela Porras Ayllón is venerated as the patron of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
