Life and Ministry
Born in Valladolid to the nobleman Pedro Regalado and Maria de la Costanilla, Peter lost his father in his youth and was raised by his devout mother. He began serving at the local Franciscan church and, at the age of ten, expressed a desire to join the Friars Minor. He was admitted to the friary in his hometown at the legal age of 14.
A pivotal moment in his life occurred in 1404 when Pedro de Villacreces visited the community. Villacreces was leading a reform movement, the Observance, which sought to bring the Order back to the simplicity and fervor of its founder, Francis of Assisi. Peter became one of Villacreces's earliest disciples.
He found a life of solitude, prayer, and poverty at the newly established friary at La Aguilera, the center of the reform community. He later became the guardian of this friary in 1415 and, upon Villacreces's death in 1422, also assumed leadership of the community at Tribulos. Peter implemented significant reforms within the Spanish friaries of his Order, adhering to a strict asceticism, including fasting almost year-round from meat and dairy products. In 1442, he was appointed the leader of all Spanish friars within the reform group. He was also known for his considerable charity towards the poor.
Veneration and Legacy
Following Peter de Regalado's death on March 31, 1456, his tomb became a site of pilgrimage. Thirty-six years later, at the insistence of Queen Isabel I, his body was exhumed and found to be incorrupt. It was subsequently placed in a more elaborate tomb.
His beatification was proclaimed by Pope Innocent XI on March 11, 1684, and his canonization was celebrated by Pope Benedict XIV on June 29, 1746. He was subsequently named the patron saint of his native city, Valladolid, and its diocese.
Peter de Regalado's feast day is observed on May 13, commemorating the translation of his body. Iconographically, he is often depicted with flames emanating from his heart.
