This experience led him to the inspiration of founding his own religious congregation dedicated to the Sacred Heart, with the aim of evangelizing through missions. He prepared for this undertaking with a retreat and guidance from his spiritual director.
Founding the Congregation and Sainthood
Garicoïts established his religious congregation in 1838, following his assistance in founding the order of Jean Elizabeth Bichier des Ages. He died in 1863, having suffered from poor health in his later years. The process for his sainthood began under Pope Leo XIII in 1899. Pope Benedict XV declared him Venerable on 10 December 1916, acknowledging his heroic virtue. Pope Pius XI beatified him in 1923, and over a decade later, Pope Pius XII canonized him as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church in 1947.
