Marie-Nicolas-Antoine Daveluy (1818-1866)
Marie-Nicolas-Antoine Daveluy was a French missionary and bishop who became a martyr for the Catholic faith in Korea. Born in Amiens, France, on March 16, 1818, he came from a devout Catholic family, with two of his brothers also becoming priests. He entered the St. Sulpice Seminary in 1834 and was ordained a priest on December 18, 1841.
Missionary Service in Korea
Despite initial poor health, Daveluy joined the Paris Foreign Missions Society on October 4, 1843, and departed for East Asia. His intended mission to the Ryukyu Islands was diverted when he was persuaded by the apostolic vicar of Korea, Jean-Joseph-Jean-Baptiste Ferréol, to accompany him to Korea. After traveling through Shanghai, where Bishop Ferréol ordained Korean seminarian Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn, Daveluy arrived in Korea in October 1845.
Scholarly Contributions and Episcopal Ministry
In Korea, Daveluy became fluent in the Korean language and distinguished himself as a scholarly missionary. He authored significant works, including a Korean-French dictionary and other books on the Catholic Church in Korea, such as 'A Brief Record of Reflection and First Journey in Divine Life,' published with the assistance of Hwang Sŏk-tu. On November 13, 1855, Pope Pius IX appointed him titular bishop of Akka and coadjutor to Bishop Siméon-François Berneux. He was consecrated a bishop by Bishop Berneux on March 25, 1857.
Martyrdom
Following the execution of Bishop Berneux during a government campaign against Christians, Daveluy assumed the role of apostolic vicar on March 8, 1866. He was promptly arrested on March 11, imprisoned, and subjected to torture, during which he staunchly defended his faith. Sentenced to death, he requested to be executed on Good Friday, March 30, 1866. He was beheaded at Galmaemot, near present-day Boryeong, along with two other French priests and two lay catechists. Daveluy and his companions were canonized as martyrs by Pope John Paul II on May 6, 1984, and are venerated as part of the 103 Korean martyrs.
