Luke Kirby

Luke Farrell Kirby (born June 29, 1978) is a Canadian actor who has gained significant recognition for his work in television and film. He is particularly remembered for his portrayal of the iconic comedian Lenny Bruce in the Amazon Prime Video comedy-drama series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, a role that earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.

Early Life and Education

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Kirby's parents were American, with his mother hailing from Brooklyn, New York City. His parents relocated to Canada from New York City in 1974. Kirby pursued his passion for acting by studying drama at the National Theatre School of Canada, a conservatory known for its focus on classical works. He completed his studies and graduated in 2000.

Career Highlights

Kirby's professional acting career began shortly after his graduation. He has an extensive background in theatre, with notable performances including roles in Geometry in Venice, Troilus and Cressida, and Defender of the Faith. His film credits include Lost and Delirious (2001), Halloween: Resurrection (2002), and Mambo Italiano, the latter earning him a Canadian Comedy Award Nomination. He also appeared in Shattered Glass and the Canadian feature All Hat.

On television, Kirby has been a series regular in HBO's Tell Me You Love Me and starred in the Canwest Global series Cra$h & Burn. His role in the TMN/Showcase mini-series Slings & Arrows is noted as a personal favorite. He received Gemini Award nominations for his work in the mini-series Sex Traffic and for a guest-star role in The Eleventh Hour.

In addition to his Emmy win for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Kirby starred as Chuck Brooks in the 2024 Peabody Award-winning film Out of My Mind from Disney+. His upcoming projects include the Amazon Prime Video series Étoile and a role as Detective Sergeant John Darcy in the fourth season of Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent.
