Bishop John Dubois of New York, in urgent need of German-speaking priests, accepted Neumann and ordained him to the subdiaconate on June 19, the diaconate on June 24, and the priesthood on June 25, 1836. He celebrated his first Mass on June 26 at St. Nicholas Church.
