A young nobleman named Britald fell in love with her and proposed marriage, but Irene refused, explaining her celibacy was due to her dedication to God as a nun.
Her tutor, a monk named Remigius, made improper advances towards Irene. When she declined, he purportedly quit his tutoring position and spread malicious rumors that she was pregnant. He allegedly also gave her a drink that caused her to appear pregnant. These rumors reached Britald, who, enraged by the supposed infidelity, hired a mercenary to kill Irene. The assassin reportedly killed her with a single sword stroke as she was returning from visiting an elderly disabled man.
Veneration and Legacy
Following her death, Irene's body was thrown into the Nabão River. Legend recounts that her body was later recovered uncorrupted by Benedictine monks near the town of Scalabis. Her uncle, Abbot Celius, is said to have received a divine revelation about her true story and the location of her body. The monks gave her a proper burial and promoted her cult.
The reverence for Irene became so significant that the town of Scalabis was eventually renamed Santarém, meaning "Saint Irene." She is recognized as the patron saint of Tomar and the namesake of Santarém. Her feast day is celebrated annually on October 20.
