Despite opposition from civic leaders in Lucca due to political reasons, Leonardi's efforts continued. He spent much of his later life in Rome, where he befriended Saint Philip Neri, who became his spiritual director. Pope Clement VIII appointed Leonardi as Commissary Apostolic for the reform of Benedictine monks of the Order of Monte Vergine in 1596, and he carried out similar work among the Vallombrosans.
Death and Sainthood
Giovanni Leonardi died on October 9, 1609, from influenza, which he contracted while ministering to the sick during an epidemic in Rome. He was venerated for his miracles and religious fervor. His memory was so highly regarded that Pope Leo XIII added his name to the Roman Martyrology. Leonardi was beatified in 1861 and canonized in 1938 by Pope Pius XI. His liturgical feast day is celebrated on October 9, and his relics are enshrined in the Church of Santa Maria in Campitelli in Rome. The church of San Giovanni Leonardi in Rome is named in his honor.
