Giovanni Calabria

Giovanni Calabria (1873–1954) was an Italian Roman Catholic priest whose life was marked by profound dedication to the welfare of the poor and the ill. His tireless work led to the establishment of two religious congregations, the Poor Servants of Divine Providence and the Poor Sisters Servants of Divine Providence. These organizations were founded with the dual purpose of providing practical care for impoverished individuals in various Italian cities and later abroad, while simultaneously emphasizing the importance of spreading the gospel message to those in need.

Life and Ministry

Born in Verona, Italy, Giovanni Calabria experienced early disruptions to his education due to his father's death. His potential was recognized by Pietro Scapini, who tutored him for priesthood studies. After a period of service in the armed forces, where he was noted for his faith, Calabria's path of service became clearer. A pivotal moment occurred in 1897 when he found an abandoned child on his doorstep, an event that spurred his charitable endeavors. In 1898, he founded the "Charitable Institution for the assistance to poor sick people" and established homes for abandoned teenagers. He was ordained a priest in 1901 and subsequently held various pastoral roles, including curate of Saint Stephen's church and rector of San Benedetto del Monte.

Founding Religious Congregations

The "Poor Servants of Divine Providence" were officially founded on November 26, 1907, later relocating and gaining diocesan and pontifical approval. Following a suggestion, Calabria established the "Poor Sisters Servants of Divine Providence" on April 17, 1910. The female branch received its own diocesan and later papal approval. These congregations became the primary vehicles for his mission to care for the marginalized.

Later Life and Legacy

Giovanni Calabria maintained a friendship with the anti-fascist Giulio Facibeni. During World War II, he played a role in protecting individuals, notably by helping to hide the Jewish doctor Mafalda Pavia near Verona. He also corresponded in Latin with the author C.S. Lewis. Calabria died on December 4, 1954, having offered his life in place of Pope Pius XII, who was ill at the time.

Sainthood

The process for his canonization began with extensive documentation and witness testimonies. His writings were reviewed and approved by theologians. Pope John Paul II declared him Venerable in 1986, recognizing his heroic virtue. Following the investigation and approval of two miracles, Giovanni Calabria was beatified on April 17, 1988, and canonized as a saint on April 18, 1999. His liturgical feast is observed on December 4.
