Gaudiosus of Tarazona

Gaudiosus of Tarazona was a bishop of Tarazona, Spain, who lived approximately in the first half of the 6th century, with his death occurring around 540. He is recognized and venerated as a saint within the Catholic Church.

Life and historical context

The historical record concerning Gaudiosus's life is notably sparse and relies on later sources. The primary extant written details about his life, apart from the breviary lessons of the Cathedral of Tarazona, were discovered on a parchment within his grave during the translation of his remains in 1573. His father, Guntha, held a position as a military official, a spatharius, at the court of the Visigothic King Theodoric the Great between 510 and 525. Gaudiosus received his education for service in the Church under the tutelage of Victorian of Asan, who was the abbot of a monastery located near Burgos (Oca).

Around 530, Gaudiosus was appointed to the episcopal see of Tarazona. Beyond this appointment, no further information is available regarding his activities as bishop. Even the precise year of his death remains undetermined, though it is placed around 540.

Veneration

Following his death, Gaudiosus was accorded veneration as a saint. According to the manuscript found in his grave, his death date was October 29th. However, the Church of Tarazona observes his feast day on November 3rd. His initial burial was in the church of St. Martin, which was later dedicated to St. Victorianus, and was attached to the monastery where he had spent his youth. A significant event in his veneration occurred in 1573 when his remains were exhumed and translated to the cathedral of Tarazona.
