Beatrice was one of eleven children of Rui Gomes da Silva, governor of Campo Maior, and Isabel de Menezes. She was raised in the household of Infante John, Lord of Reguengos de Monsaraz. In 1447, she accompanied Infante John's daughter, Princess Isabel of Portugal, to Castile to marry King John II of Castile. Beatrice served as Isabel's lady-in-waiting and close friend. However, the Queen's jealousy led to Beatrice's imprisonment in a small cell. Founding of the Conceptionists

In 1484, with the support of Queen Isabella I of Castile, Beatrice and her companions occupied a palace in Toledo designated for their new community, named the Monastery of the Holy Faith. This monastery was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary. In 1489, Pope Innocent VIII granted permission for the nuns to adopt the Cistercian Rule, obligating them to recite the office of the Immaculate Conception daily.
Religious habit and legacy
Beatrice designed the religious habit for her order: white garments with a white scapular and a blue mantle, adorned with a medallion of Mary under her title of the Immaculate Conception. The order received its own rule of life in 1511 from Pope Julius II, and special constitutions were drawn up in 1516. The Monastery of the Holy Faith became the Monastery of the Immaculate Conception. A second monastery was founded in 1507, leading to the order's expansion throughout Portugal, Spain, their colonies in South America, Italy, and France, reaching a height of some 200 monasteries worldwide.
Veneration
Beatrice de Menezes da Silva was beatified on July 28, 1926, by Pope Pius XI. Her cause for sainthood was opened in 1950, and she was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1976.
