Life and Ministry
Born in Zamora, Spain, on March 10, 1598, Rodríguez completed his novitiate in Valladolid before being sent to Paraguay. He departed from Lisbon, Portugal, as part of an expedition led by Father Juan de Viana. In 1626, he was assigned to the Guaycuru missions, situated across the Paraguay River from Asunción. Notably, he was the first missionary to learn the local language, undertaking the vital tasks of preaching and facilitating the spread of faith while advocating for the well-being of the indigenous population.
In 1628, his mission extended to the Guaraní missions of Paraná and Itaipú. He was tasked with assisting Roque González y de Santa Cruz in the establishment of the town of Todos los Santos de Caaró, located on the eastern bank of the Uruguay River. However, this endeavor met with violent opposition from Ñezú, a sorcerer and chieftain of Igní, who ordered the missionaries' deaths.
Martyrdom
On November 15, 1628, as the missionaries gathered in the plaza for the installation of a bell, indigenous people attacked. In the ensuing chaos, Roque González y de Santa Cruz was struck on the head. Hearing the commotion, Rodríguez emerged from the church and was subsequently beaten to death with a stone mallet, known as an itaizá. Their bodies were then dragged into the church and burned along with religious paintings and images. Juan de Castillo met a similar fate a few days later, assassinated on November 17, 1628.
Veneration
Juan Eusebio Nieremberg, a contemporary and classmate of the three martyrs, documented their lives in his biographies written in 1644. Alfonso Rodríguez Olmedo was beatified by Pope Pius XI on January 28, 1934. He, along with his companions Juan de Castillo and Roque González y de Santa Cruz, was later canonized by Pope John Paul II in Asunción, Paraguay, solidifying their status as saints in the Catholic Church.
