Caloocan Cathedral

San Roque Cathedral Parish, commonly referred to as Caloocan Cathedral, stands as the principal church and the ecclesiastical seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kalookan. Located in Poblacion, Caloocan, Metro Manila, Philippines, its history traces back to a small visita, or chapel-of-ease, initiated in 1765. The church was formally established as an independent parish on April 8, 1815, and subsequently transferred to its present site, known as Paltok.

Historical Significance

The construction of a larger church began in 1819 and was completed by 1847. The parish faced a temporary cessation in 1889 due to unmet requirements but was revived in 1892. During the Philippine Revolution and the subsequent Philippine-American War, San Roque Church served as a crucial meeting point for revolutionaries. In 1899, the church was partially damaged by U.S. forces, and the site was later utilized as a field hospital and a stable.

Renovations and Elevation to Cathedral Status

Following the war, the church underwent reconstruction in 1914 and further renovations in the following decades, including the addition of tiles in the aisles and the renovation of its façade. In 1977, plans for a new church were made but did not materialize, leading to significant renovations that were blessed in 1981. In the Jubilee Year 2000, it was designated as one of the Jubilee Churches in the Archdiocese of Manila. A pivotal moment in its history occurred on June 28, 2003, when Pope John Paul II created the Diocese of Kalookan and elevated San Roque Church to cathedral status. The church was solemnly dedicated on December 12, 2015, following extensive renovations to its altar and sanctuary. A bone relic of Saint Roch, a gift from Pope Francis, was deposited into the altar table during the dedication rite.
