Mallikarjun Kharge

Mallikarjun Kharge is a prominent Indian politician and lawyer, born on July 21, 1942, in Karnataka. He currently holds the significant positions of President of the Indian National Congress, a role he assumed in October 2022, and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, a position he has held since February 2021. Kharge's political career began in 1972 in state politics, where he served multiple terms as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Gurmitkal and Chittapur constituencies.

Political Career and Contributions

Kharge's extensive experience includes serving as a minister in various portfolios under several Chief Ministers of Karnataka, such as S. M. Krishna and Veerappa Moily. He also led the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee from 2005 to 2008. Transitioning to national politics, he was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2009 and subsequently served as the Union Cabinet Minister of Railways and Minister of Labour and Employment during the UPA 2 government. A notable achievement during his tenure was his advocacy for the Ninety-eighth Amendment of the Constitution of India, which led to the establishment of the Kalyana Karnataka Development Board and secured regional development initiatives.

Leadership in the Indian National Congress

His election as the President of the Indian National Congress in 2022 marked a significant moment, as he was the first individual from outside the Gandhi family to hold the post in 24 years. Under his presidency, the party saw gains in the 2024 Indian general election, forming the official opposition. Kharge is also recognized for his deep understanding of multiple languages, including English, Hindi, Urdu, Kannada, Telugu, and Marathi, and his active involvement in religious and cultural institutions, including his role as Founder-Chairman of the Siddharth Vihar Trust, which built the Buddha Vihar in Gulbarga.
