Danny Denzongpa

Danny Denzongpa, born Tsering Phuntsok Denzongpa on February 25, 1948, is a celebrated Indian actor, playback singer, film director, and businessman of Sikkimese descent. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he has appeared in over 190 films, primarily in Hindi cinema, with notable contributions to Bengali, Nepali, and Tamil films as well. Denzongpa is widely recognized for his impactful performances, particularly his iconic portrayals of villains, and also for his positive roles.

Early Life and Education

Born in Yuksom, Kingdom of Sikkim, Denzongpa received his early education at Birla Vidya Mandir in Nainital and completed his college studies at St Joseph's College, Darjeeling, in 1964. His early interests included horses and horse-riding, stemming from his family's involvement in horse breeding. He also developed skills as a painter, writer, and sculptor. Initially aspiring to join the Indian Army, he qualified for the Armed Forces Medical College but chose to pursue a career in filmmaking at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. It was during his time at FTII that he adopted the name 'Danny' at the suggestion of his classmate, Jaya Bachchan, due to the perceived difficulty of pronouncing his birth name.

Acting Career

Denzongpa debuted in B.R. Ishara's 'Zaroorat' (released in 1972) and gained prominence with his role in Gulzar's 'Mere Apne' (1971). He first ventured into antagonist roles with B.R. Chopra's 'Dhund' in 1973. Throughout the 1970s, he starred in commercially successful and critically acclaimed films like 'Chor Machaye Shor', 'Kalicharan', and 'Devata', often in second lead or positive roles. By the 1980s, disillusioned with repetitive villainous roles, he took a break from films, focusing on trekking and developing new script ideas. This period led to his directorial debut with 'Phir Wahi Raat', which was well-received.

Following the success of his directorial venture, he returned to acting, taking on lead roles in films such as 'Bulundi'. However, as many of his subsequent films did not perform well, he began accepting supporting roles, often playing characters older than his actual age. His performances in films like 'Dharm Aur Qanoon' and 'Jeeo Aur Jeene Do' revitalized his career as a formidable villain. From the mid-1980s through the 1990s, he frequently played the lead antagonist opposite many of the era's leading actors. His command of the Urdu language was also noted in films like 'Sanam Bewafa' and 'Khuda Gawah'. In the early 2000s, he took a hiatus from films before making a strong comeback as a villain in the Tamil film 'Enthiran' and later in major Bollywood productions like 'Jai Ho' and 'Bang Bang'. He also appeared in international productions such as 'Seven Years in Tibet' and played significant roles in films like 'Baby' and its prequel 'Naam Shabana'.

Singing and Business Ventures

Beyond his acting prowess, Danny Denzongpa is a talented singer. He has sung duets with legendary Indian vocalists and gained significant popularity as a singer in Nepal and parts of India like Darjeeling, Sikkim, and Assam between 1975 and 1990. His musical influences are evident in his work, including the inspiration for a song in his directorial debut 'Phir Wohi Raat'. In 1987, Denzongpa ventured into business by launching Yuksom Breweries in Sikkim, which quickly rose to become the leading brewery in Northeast India.

Accolades

In recognition of his contributions to Indian cinema and arts, Danny Denzongpa was honored with the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award, in 2003.
