Ayya Sudhamma Bhikkhuni

Ayya Sudhamma Bhikkhuni is a prominent figure in the Western Theravada Buddhist tradition, serving as the abbess of the Charlotte Buddhist Vihara. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1963, she pursued a legal career after graduating from New York University's School of Law before dedicating herself to monastic life.

Ordination and Revival of the Bhikkhuni Sangha

Her monastic journey began in 1999 as a sāmaṇerī under Henepola Gunaratana at the Bhavana Society. A pivotal moment in her life, and for Buddhist history in the West, occurred in early 2003 when she became the first American-born woman to receive full bhikkhuni ordination in Sri Lanka. Upon returning to the United States, she served as a resident teacher at the Carolina Buddhist Vihara. In 2013, she was instrumental in founding the Charlotte Buddhist Vihara in her hometown, where she continues her work as abbess.

Significant Contributions and Recognition

Ayya Sudhamma Bhikkhuni has been a driving force in establishing and strengthening the Theravada bhikkhuni lineage outside of Asia. In 2005, she participated in the founding of the North American Bhikkhuni Association. Her significant achievements were recognized in 2006 when she was honored as an "Outstanding Woman in Buddhism" at the United Nations in Bangkok.

In 2007, she played a key role in organizing a historic gathering of nine bhikkhunis at the Carolina Buddhist Vihara. This meeting marked the first time Theravada bhikkhunis outside of Asia convened to recite the Pātimokkha, a significant monastic disciplinary text, and to perform other official Sangha acts. This event was followed by the first-ever Kathina ceremony held by Theravada bhikkhunis outside of Asia, signifying the revival and establishment of the Theravada Bhikkhuni Sangha in America.
