The area that is now White Salmon was first settled in 1852 by Erastus Joslyn and his wife. This period marked a significant transition for the region, as it was the ancestral homeland of the Klickitat Tribe, who were part of the larger Yakama Confederated Nations. The Klickitat Tribe sold some land to the Joslyn family, with historical accounts suggesting they were generally advocates for Native American rights during that era. However, following the Yakama War, the region was opened for white settlement on October 31, 1858, leading to rapid and heavy immigration by white settlers making land claims. This historical turn of events resulted in the Klickitat people being compelled to relocate to the Yakama Reservation.
