Maria Concepción Barrecheguren García

Maria Concepción Barrecheguren García, also known as Conchita Barrecheguren, was a young Spanish Catholic laywoman whose life, though marked by severe and chronic illness, became a testament to profound faith and spiritual resilience. Born on November 27, 1905, in Granada, Spain, she was the only child of Francisco Barrecheguren and Concha García, both from prominent and devout families.

From a very early age, Maria Concepción faced significant health challenges. She suffered from acute enterocolitis, which at one point endangered her life, and later dealt with intestinal infections, a mental illness, and ultimately tuberculosis. These health struggles prevented her from attending formal schooling, leading her father to personally oversee her education in social and catechetical principles. Despite her physical frailties, she harbored a deep desire for a consecrated religious life, viewing her suffering as an opportunity for greater surrender to God.

Her spiritual life was characterized by a strong devotion, particularly to Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, and a consistent reception of the Eucharist. Even during her hospitalization, she maintained a spirit of joy and patience, which was noted by those who cared for her. Her pilgrimage to Lisieux in August 1926, undertaken despite her poor health, marked a significant point in her life, though it was shortly after this that she contracted tuberculosis.

Maria Concepción Barrecheguren García died on May 13, 1927, at the age of 22, due to tuberculosis. Her cause for beatification was opened in 1946, and she was declared venerable by Pope Francis on May 5, 2020, the same day her father also received this title. Following the recognition of a miracle attributed to her intercession, she was beatified on May 6, 2023, in the Granada Cathedral. Her liturgical memory is observed annually on May 13, the anniversary of her death.
