Giovanna Francesca Michelotti

Giovanna Francesca Michelotti, born Anna Michelotti on 29 August 1843 in Annecy, Kingdom of Sardinia, was an Italian religious sister. She is recognized for her profound dedication to the poor and the sick, which led her to establish a new religious congregation. Upon entering religious life, she adopted the name Giovanna Francesca.

Life and historical context

Michelotti experienced poverty and fatherlessness in her childhood, which fostered a deep faith and an unwavering focus on the plight of the less fortunate. This early experience shaped her calling to religious service. She pursued her studies at the Institute of the Sisters of Saint Charles in France. The death of her mother and brother in 1863 profoundly impacted her life, leading her to move to Turin. It was in Turin, in 1874, that she donned the religious habit and made her solemn vows.

Major contributions

In 1875, Michelotti founded the Little Servants of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the Sick Poor. This congregation was dedicated to ministering exclusively to those who were poor and ill. She also briefly worked as a teacher and spent time in prayer and study, meditating on scripture and seeking to spread Christ's message and sacraments to the poor. She actively sought spiritual guidance from confessors, such as John Bosco, for her significant decisions.

Beatification and legacy

Giovanna Francesca Michelotti died on 1 February 1888, after a lengthy illness. Her beatification process commenced in Turin in 1933. Her spiritual writings were approved by theologians, and her cause was formally opened by Pope Pius XII, granting her the title Servant of God. Pope Paul VI recognized her heroic virtue and declared her Venerable in 1966. He later approved a miracle and officially beatified her on 1 November 1975. Her congregation continues her mission of service to the sick and poor.
