Darwin Ramos

Darwin Ramos (1994–2012) was a Filipino child whose life of faith and joy amidst profound suffering has led to a cause for beatification.

Biography and Early Life

Born on December 17, 1994, in Pasay, Philippines, Darwin Ramos was the second of nine children in a family struggling with extreme poverty. His father was an alcoholic, and his mother worked as a laundrywoman. To help provide for the family, Darwin, alongside his sister, became a waste picker, sifting through garbage to find materials to sell. This difficult life meant neither he nor his siblings could attend school.

At the age of seven, Darwin was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a genetic disease that caused progressive muscle weakness, beginning in his legs. As his condition worsened, he progressively lost the ability to stand. His father exploited Darwin's illness by making him beg at street corners for money, a humiliating experience for Darwin, though he endured it to help feed his siblings.

Life at the Tulay ng Kabataan Foundation

In 2006, street educators from the Tulay ng Kabataan Foundation ("A Bridge for Children Foundation") encountered Darwin while he was begging. Recognizing his plight, they offered him a place at their home for boys with special needs. Darwin accepted, as he could no longer stand. He was baptized on December 23, 2006, and later received his first communion and the sacrament of confirmation.

During his time at the foundation, Darwin experienced increasing respiratory difficulties requiring hospitalization. Despite his suffering, he maintained a positive attitude, offering his pains and speaking of his illness as his "mission." He developed a deep personal relationship with Christ, prioritizing prayer and spiritual communion even when unwell.

Final Days and Legacy

In September 2012, Darwin was hospitalized due to breathing difficulties. He remained conscious and able to communicate through writing until his final days. He expressed gratitude and happiness, writing "A huge thank you" and "I am very happy" shortly before his death on September 23, 2012. His funeral mass was well-attended, and he was buried in Pasay City Public Cemetery.

Darwin Ramos's memory continues to inspire many in the Philippines. People gather at his tomb, and his life story has been documented in books, highlighting his example of joy, love, and faith through hardship. In March 2018, Bishop Honesto Ongtioco opened the cause for Darwin Ramos's beatification, recognizing his exemplary Christian life. The prayer for his beatification received ecclesiastical approval in November 2018, seeking his glorification on earth as a model for young and sick people.
