Clara Fey

Clara Fey (1815–1894) was a German nun and the founder of the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus, an order dedicated to the education and care of underprivileged children. Her life's work centered on social service and religious education, leaving a lasting legacy in the Catholic Church.

Life and Historical Context

Born Clara Fey on April 11, 1815, in Aachen, she was the fourth of five children to a wealthy textile industrialist. Her upbringing instilled in her a deep sense of charity, a value amplified by the early death of her father and her mother's emphasis on helping those less fortunate. Fey received her education under the noted teacher Luise Hensel and became acquainted with other significant religious figures of her time, such as Pauline von Mallinckrodt and Franziska Schevier.

Observing the poor conditions in her town during her childhood, Fey resolved to dedicate her life to aiding the suffering. This commitment led her to establish a school for poor children in Aachen in 1837. Around this period, she was drawn to the writings of Teresa of Ávila, initially professing a desire to become a Carmelite nun. However, her spiritual advisor, Wilhelm Sartorius, guided her towards the works of Francis de Sales for theological inspiration.

Major Contributions

On February 2, 1844, Clara Fey founded the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus in Aachen. The primary mission of this congregation was to lead children to Jesus Christ and provide them with an education within a religious framework. Fey made her vows as a nun in 1850. The order received diocesan approval from the Archbishop of Cologne on January 28, 1848, followed by a papal decree of praise from Pope Pius IX on July 11, 1862. Full papal approval was granted by Pope Leo XIII on June 15, 1888. The Rule of the order was based on the teachings of Augustine of Hippo.

Despite her own frail health and frequent bouts of illness, Fey served as the order's superior general from its founding until her death. In 1875, the political climate of the Kulturkampf forced her and the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus to relocate to the Netherlands. She remained in the Netherlands until her passing in May 1894. Following her death, a devotional cult began at her gravesite in Simpelveld.

Beatification

Clara Fey's journey towards beatification began with an informative process in Roermond from 1916 to 1924. Her spiritual writings were approved by theologians in 1930 and again in 1943. A formal introduction to her cause was issued by Pope Pius XII on August 11, 1958, at which point she was titled Servant of God. Pope John Paul II confirmed her heroic virtue, leading to her title of Venerable on May 14, 1991. On May 4, 2017, Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of a decree approving a miracle attributed to her intercession, paving the way for her beatification. Clara Fey was beatified in Aachen on May 5, 2018.
