In November 1885, Markiewicz embarked for Turin to join the Salesians of Don Bosco, drawn to their spirituality. He made his final vows in 1887. Due to difficulties in maintaining the Italian model and disagreements with his Salesian superiors regarding modifications, Markiewicz sought and received permission to found a new congregation.

He also opened an orphanage that housed over 400 residents. His work received encouragement and approval from the Bishop of Przemyśl, Józef Sebastian Pelczar. Markiewicz died in 1912 from complications related to his tuberculosis.

The male and female branches were approved in the same year and 1928, respectively. Full papal approval was granted by Pope Paul VI on June 15, 1966. Beatification
The diocesan process for Markiewicz's beatification began in 1958, granting him the title Servant of God. The Congregation for the Causes of Saints finalized its investigation and presented the cause to Pope John Paul II, who conferred upon Markiewicz the title of Venerable in 1994, acknowledging his heroic virtue. Pope John Paul II approved a miracle attributed to his intercession in December 2004, paving the way for his beatification. The beatification ceremony was held on June 19, 2005, in Warsaw, with Cardinal Józef Glemp presiding.
