The Basilica of Our Lady of El Valle, formally known in Spanish as Basílica Menor Nuestra Señora de El Valle, is a prominent religious edifice situated in El Valle del Espíritu Santo, a town on Margarita Island within the Nueva Esparta state of northwestern Venezuela. Its architectural style is Gothic Revival.

History and Religious Significance

The basilica is dedicated to the Virgen del Valle, a revered figure who serves as the patron saint of the town and holds significant importance as the patron saint of the Venezuelan Navy. The origins of the site as a church trace back to the founding of San Nicolás de Bari. The structure has undergone several modifications over time, with one notable alteration coordinated by Father Philip Martinez in 1733.

A pivotal moment in its history occurred on September 8, 1955, when it was declared the Basilica of Nueva Esparta state. This designation marks the commencement of its annual festivities, which are deeply ingrained in local tradition. These celebrations begin each year with the symbolic descent of the Virgin on September 8th, a ceremony that positions her where the public can view her closely. The festivities culminate on December 8th with the ascent of the Virgin, who is then placed on an altar at the top of the basilica, where religious services, including masses officiated by the priest, are held.

In recognition of its spiritual importance and architectural heritage, the Basilica of Our Lady of El Valle was officially declared a Minor Basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1995, further solidifying its status as a significant pilgrimage and religious center.
