About Laurence

Saint Laurence

Saint Laurence, also known as Lawrence, was a prominent deacon in the 3rd-century Roman Catholic Church, martyred during the persecution of Christians ordered by Emperor Valerian in 258 AD. His birth date is traditionally given as December 31, 225, in Huesca, Hispania Tarraconensis (modern Spain), and he is believed to be the son of Orentius and Patientia.

Life and Ministry

Lawrence encountered Pope Sixtus II in Caesaraugusta (Zaragoza) and they traveled together to Rome. Upon becoming Pope in 257, Sixtus II ordained the young Lawrence as a deacon and later appointed him Archdeacon of Rome. This position involved significant responsibility, including the care of the Church's treasury and the distribution of alms to the poor. During a period when Christians who were denounced faced execution and confiscation of their goods, Emperor Valerian issued an edict in August 258 requiring bishops, priests, and deacons to be put to death.

Martyrdom and Legacy

Following the execution of Pope Sixtus II on August 6, 258, the prefect of Rome demanded that Lawrence surrender the Church's riches. According to tradition, Lawrence requested three days to gather the wealth and used this time to distribute Church property to the indigent. Upon presenting himself to the prefect on the third day, he revealed the poor and suffering as the true treasures of the Church. For his defiance, Lawrence was sentenced at San Lorenzo in Miranda and martyred on August 10, 258. He is traditionally depicted as being placed on a gridiron over hot coals, leading to the gridiron becoming his most recognizable symbol. His burial site is located in San Lorenzo fuori le Mura.

Veneration and Patronage

Saint Lawrence is widely venerated in the Roman Catholic Church. His feast day is celebrated on August 10, and he is honored as the third patron of Rome after Saints Peter and Paul. He is invoked as the patron saint of librarians, archivists, comedians, cooks, and tanners, due to his role in protecting Church documents and his charitable work. Many churches, schools, and geographical locations worldwide are named in his honor, including the Gulf and River of Saint Lawrence in Canada. The Perseid meteor shower, occurring annually around his feast day, is sometimes referred to as the "Tears of St Lawrence."
